All About Water Based Paints

What are Water Based paint products?

Water based paint products are also called latex paint products that consist of a pigment and binder with water used as a carrier.

When to Use Water-Based Paints?

Water based paints are best suited for exterior walls and interiors with damp surfaces andspaces sustaining lots of moisture like kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, etc. as water based paints are weather resistant and humidity resistant.

How to identify whether a product is water based or not?

To identify whether the paint is water based or not, a small test using methylated spirit can be done-
  • Soak a piece of cloth with methylated spirit and rub it on a small part of the painted wall surface.
  • If the paint colour starts to appear on the cloth, then it should be understood that the paint done on the surface is water based.

Pros and Cons of Water Based Paints:

Advantages:-
  • Better adhesion to most substrates and better ductility than oil based paints. Due to which these paints are resistant to paint failures like peeling, flaking and blistering.
  • Resists colour fading.
  • Algae and mold growth resistant properties due to which the paint maintains a fresh appearance.
  • Can be used on a wide variety of substrates including wood, concrete, plaster, brick, aluminum siding, vinyl siding and galvanized metal.
  • Due to low Volatile Organic Compounds, it has less odor than oil based paints.
  • Easy to clean using soap and water.
  • Paint takes about 6 hours to dry, this makes it possible to do a second coat of paint in the same day.
Disadvantages:-
  • It is difficult to use water based paints, when weather temperature falls below 50 degree fahrenheit.
  • Hiding brush strokes requires professional painterly techniques. Because it doesn't spread flat like oil based paints.
  • Can be difficult to adhere on rough and shiny metal surfaces.
  • Applying a water-based paint to an unprimed wood surface may expose the wood grain.
  • For exterior wooden and metal surfaces water based paints are less preferred.
General application procedure of water based paint are as follows:

For Old Painted Surfaces:-

  • First clean the surface with sugar soap or crude cutter.
  • Then sand the surface to remove the greasiness or sheen.
  • Apply a coat of Ginger 1-2-3 primer.
  • Then complete the painting process by applying 2 coats of water based paint of your choice.

For New Masonry Surface:-

  • First remove loose dust with a dry brush or vacuum cleaner.
  • Then wet the surface using a damp cloth. This step is necessary as it helps the water based paint adhere to the surface and spread evenly reducing brush stroke marks.
  • Apply a coat of Ginger 1-2-3 primer to smoothen the surface.
  • Finally apply 2 coats of water based paint.
