Interior and exterior walls of the house can be painted easily in less time using a paint roller. The paint roller tool covers more space on the surface to be painted In comparison to a brush and provides a smooth finish. But it is necessary to make the right choice of paint roller depending on the surface to be painted.

Different types of paint rollers and roller covers known as sleeves are available in the market to paint small areas, walls, rough surfaces, etc. Let us see the process of painting exterior and interior walls and ceilings of the house using roller painting techniques.

What is Paint Roller Tool

A paint roller usually consists of two parts - the roller frame and the roller cover/sleeve. The paint roller cover is attached to the roller frame. The painting process is completed by holding the handle of the paint roller. Different types of roller sleeves according to the texture of the surface are available in the market for wall painting. You have the option to attach the sleeve to the roller frame as per your choice.

There is an option to add additional handles with the paint roller tool for painting high surfaces of walls and ceilings.

The paint roller tool is suitable for painting walls, ceilings, and large furniture surfaces in a short span of time. Due to the roller's ability to absorb a large amount of paint into a porous surface, it can cover a greater area at once than a paintbrush. It is suitable for covering and spreading a uniform paint layer over the surface.

The choice of roller cover is necessary based on the texture of the painting surface. For example, rollers with a smooth surface give a smooth finish. While for painting rough surfaces or painted walls/ceilings, thick or thready roller sleeves are suitable.

Sizes of Paint Roller

Generally, three sizes of paint roller tools are used -

Mini Roller - Its width is about 15 mm and its diameter is up to 150 mm. Rollers of this size are used for painting edges, corners, or hard-to-reach surfaces.

Midi Roller- These are medium-sized rollers ranging in size from 150-250 mm in width and 50- 90 mm in diameter. Rollers of this size are suitable for all types of home painting tasks. All professional paint craftsmen also use midi rollers. The roller is used.

Front Roller- It is more than 250 mm in width and 80 mm in diameter. It is used for painting irregular surfaces of walls and interior ceilings. It is mostly used by professional painters.

Types of Paint Roller Sleeves

Various types of surface covers are available on the cylinder of paint roller such as foam, rubber roller, polyamide/polyamide thread roller, fur roller, velour roller.

The texture of these roller sleeves varies depending on the type of material used. As different types of cloth fibers and foam have different paint absorption capacities,

Therefore, it is also necessary to consider the right size and type of paint roller selection.

Roller Painting Technique

By adopting these roller painting tips, you will be able to get the best finish of painting on the walls, ceilings, or exterior walls of your room:

Loading Roller with Paint

Roller trays are considered suitable for roller painting applications for untrained painters. Paint should be filled in the tray only till the paint roller cylinder is immersed in the paint, otherwise, there is a possibility of paint getting on the edges of the roller's handle and extra paint from the roller spills outside the tray. Due to which paint drips during painting can cause spots on the surface.

Roller painting Process

  • After opening the paint container, first of all, mix the paint well inside the container so that the paint does not get deposited in the bottom of the container.
  • Then pour enough paint in which the fabric of the roller can be completely immersed.
  • It is necessary to dip the roller two to three times in the paint so that the paint gets absorbed well in the fabric of the roller.
  • Then for the best paint finish look, measure the paint roller tool's cylinder width and then multiply the result by 5. For example- if the paint tool's cylinder width is 5, then you have to multiply it by 5. so the result is 5x5=25.
  • Now divide the surface to be painted into 5 strips of squares of the same size (25 cm/meter/inches) respectively.
  • After this, except for the strip of the first square, fill the paint in the second strip with the help of a roller.
  • Then skip the third and fourth stripe and color in the fifth strip.
  • Now in return again fill color in the 4th, 1st, and 3rd strip respectively.
  • Then while applying the second coat of paint, paint the third, first, fourth, fifth and second strips respectively.
  • After painting the entire surface, scrub the paint off the roller. Then roll it on the surface until the surface is smooth and free of all unevenness. Care must be taken in applying the roller on the surface as pressing the roller too hard can result in thick paint streaks.
  • In the opinion of experts, the use of this technique should be used to paint the walls and ceiling, so that the distribution of paint over the surface is uniform.
  • It can take 24 hours or more for the paint to dry thoroughly after the painting is done, depending on the humidity in the weather.

Cleaning Paint Roller Tool

If the paint roller needs to be used for re-painting, then the paint from its surface will have to be scraped lengthwise with the help of a scraper. Water-based paint can be cleaned with water But oil best paint can be cleaned after immersing it in a carbonic solvent such as acetone, gasoline, etc. After cleaning the paint roller tool should be dried in the air.
