Metal Painting Procedures: Standard Process and Techniques

Deciding to paint an old piece of metal to refurbish it?This article is going to be fruitful.

So you must be wondering that what all stuff are you going to need in order to paint your piece of metal?

So here goes on the list:

All stuff you would be requiring includes:

  • That piece of metal that you want to refurbish
  • Paintbrushes
  • Wire brush
  • Sandpaper
  • Zinc-chromate primer (if the metal is rusted)
  • Oil-based primer
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint sprayer
  • Gloves
  • Drop cloth

STRIPPING OLD PAINT FROM THE METAL PIECE:

The first and foremost step is to remove old paint from the piece of metal. You can use a wire brush for that as it is useful in stripping the old paint from larger surfaces and you can use sandpaper for smaller areas.

This is an unavoidable step as you cannot paint an already painted piece of metal.

REMOVAL OF DUST PARTICLES

The next step deals with the removal of dust particles from the metal piece. If the dust and extras are not removed after the process of sanding or stripping then the particles present on the piece of metal would interrupt the painter during priming and painting. This is an important step that is required for the smoothness of the surface of the metal piece.

PRIMING

In the case of metal priming, 2 steps have to be performed if your metal piece is rusted.

If the metal piece is rusted then you need to apply Zinc-chromate primer first. If your metal is not rusted you can just start off with oil-based primer. Before the application of any primer, you need to scrape off any loose rust and wipe it down to remove any flakes or residue. Once you are done with the removal of rust apply Zinc Chromate Primer then followed by the normal oil-based primer.

You can use spray primers as they give a really smooth surface that would give a proficient look to the metal piece.

At least 2 coats of primers should be applied so that the paint can be applied with ease. Here is our Recent Work for Priming -

PAINTING

This is the final step to refurbish your old piece of metal.

Select a colour of your choice that would go on the metal piece and remember it complements with other things. Go for Acrylic paint. Paint the metal piece with the help of paintbrushes or you can use a paint sprayer for better and smooth results.

Let the first coat of paint dry up and then apply the second coat.

Remember while applying: Apply paint coats to the level that you find it okay. At least 2 layers of paint should be applied so that your metal looks like a new one. Once you are satisfied with the paint let it dry for about 48 hours before use.

This will prevent accidental damage to the finished surface.

PRECAUTIONS:

You need to take some precautions while painting metal -

1. Firstly, work in an open area. It should be well-aerated.

2. Secondly, do not forget the mask as metal particles can prove to be hazardous for your health.

3. Last but not least, always wear gloves. It will help you to be safe and will prevent your skin to be in contact with rust or any other chemicals.
